Sears Galewood, from the 1930 Modern Homes catalog. |
This is an authenticated Sears Galewood in the West Lawn neighborhood of Chicago. Sears Roebuck held the mortgage.
Sears offered two clones of this house: the Berwyn and the Mayfield. Only the Galewood was offered with the brick facade. Additionally, the Galewood had a slightly larger living room than the other two models.
The architect of the Galewood was David S. Betcone.
This two-bedroom brick bungalow was built between 1930 and 1933. The Galewood was almost 25 feet wide, and this house just fit on the 30-foot-wide lot.
The original owners were Walter Thomas Lane and his wife, Elizabeth. Walter was a construction worker and possibly put up the house himself. They had moved on by 1942.
